Energy reduction and reduction in emissions

The principal air emissions identified as being generated by the Company’s activities include greenhouse gas emissions, carbon dioxide oxides of nitrogen and dust. At each site there is a monitoring program for all emissions and concerted effort to reduce emissions through regular vehicle maintenance and reduced usage. The conversion of vehicles to alternative fuels and alternative power sources is taking place wherever this is a possibility.

Dust control is ongoing and involves dust-reduction measures during the dry seasons at all sites

LEFA

There is no national policy on energy reduction in Guinea at present. Energy consumption is a significant cost to the operation, however, and fuel use is closely monitored. The site follows internationally accepted practices such as the suppression of dust emissions.

Maco Mine

The Philippine Clean Air Act (Republic Act No.8749) is being adhered to at the project and includes the monitoring of surface and underground emissions produced by vehicles and equipment (including the monitoring and emission tests regularly conducted on power generation sets and motors).

Nalunaq Mine

Greenland passed legislation on Energy Conservation. The Danish Government signed the Kyoto agreement in 2003 and the local government in Greenland is preparing to undertake local measures in the future to ensure compliance.

Nugget Pond Processing Facility

The Nugget Pond Facility is required to submit an annual report (National Pollutant Release Inventory) to Environment Canada as a requirement of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. This report lists all pollutant releases, disposals, and transfers for recycling and monitors employee threshold limits based on employee man hours worked.
